AB 540 Ally Training to Support Immigrant Student Success

Ally training crewCerritos College hosted the first AB 540 Ally Training in April.  The training aims to create and maintain a welcoming and supportive environment for undocumented students and educate faculty and staff about the needs and issues of undocumented students and their families.

The AB 540 Ally Training was a collaboration between the AB 540 Taskforce, AB 540 advocate Dr. Elena Macias, and the Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Committee (DEEOAC).  The session provided a comprehensive ally training, including the history of immigration policy and how it impacts understanding of immigrants and undocumented students, current legislation, financial aid resources, and a student panel sharing their experiences.

The AB 540 Taskforce is a working group of staff, faculty, and management who meet regularly to discuss the challenges of undocumented students and implement strategies to reach out to this population of students to increase awareness of resources and success in college.  Dr. Elena Macias is a community organizer, advocate, and former educator and administrator at CSULB.  Dr. Macias has a long history of supporting undocumented students.  She currently trains campus faculty and staff in becoming better allies and supporters of undocumented students.
