Cerritos College Offers New Chicano Studies Program

Mecha de Cerritos dancersCerritos College’s new Mexican American Latino/a Chicano/a Department will offer a Chicano Studies program beginning fall 2017.

The new program features classes from three academic divisions: humanities, liberal arts, and fine arts, and examines Chicano Studies from various aspects, including social science, history, women’s studies, political science, language, and art. Students majoring in Chicano Studies enroll in classes from a variety of disciplines that enrich their understanding of the experiences and contributions of Mexican Americans, Chicanos/as and Latinos/as past and present. The Chicano Studies Associate in Arts Degree requires completion of courses from the fields of history, art, women’s studies, sociology, philosophy, psychology, English, and Spanish. 

“We are excited to bring this new program to increase understanding of Mexican American and Latino communities and a population that played a significant role in shaping our nation’s history,” said Carlos Arce, Chair, Mexican American Latino/a Chicano/a Department.
