Jim Driskell with colleaguesCerritos College’s woodworking instructor Jim Driskell received the Los Angeles County Industrial Technology Education Association (LACITEA) 2017 College Teacher of the Year award. The annual LACITEA College Teacher of the Year Award is among the highest honors given to a technology education community college teacher, and is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession and students.

Jim is a craftsman, artist, and enthusiastic instructor with 20 years of teaching woodturning. He loves his profession and has three objectives for his classes: safety; fun; and the creation of a passion for woodturning among his students. He succeeds in all three.

In 1996, Jim organized the woodturning program at the Woodworkers Club in Santa Ana. He taught classes there for several years. Later in 1999, Jim developed the successful woodturning program at Cerritos College, and he has taught at the College ever since.

A giving person, Jim has made many charitable contributions, donating turnings to the Cerritos College Foundation, Project Hope, St. Jude Centers for Rehabilitation and Wellness, and the Los Angeles County Industrial and Technology Education auction for student scholarships. He has also created many turnings for the Beads of Courage Program at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, a program for children with cancer and other serious illnesses.

Testament to Jim’s skill and influence, many of his students have gone on to become teachers and professionals in the craft of woodturning.
