Disability Mentoring Day Inspires Students

Cerritos College students at Mentoring DayTwenty-seven Cerritos College students attended the national Disability Mentoring Day hosted at Los Angeles City Hall on October 18. The College was recognized as an outstanding participant in Mentoring Day for having the most student participants of all colleges that attended. The campus was also recognized in 2015.

Students were matched with mentors in their areas of career interest and spent the day job shadowing. Students visited the Los Angeles City Hall Information Technology Department, Finance Department, City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Los Angeles Trade Technical College, and the Los Angeles Zoo.

Cerritos College students Ben Partida-Silva and Erin Lane shared their positive experience on stage when they returned from the employer/mentor sites.

"Disability Mentoring Day gives our students a glimpse of various career opportunities and connects them with a mentor who helps and guides them in their future career goals," said Aurora Segura, Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) counselor at Cerritos College who accompanied the students.

On Disability Mentoring Day, people with disabilities across the nation spend a day learning about the skills and education needed to succeed in the current job market. Employers are also exposed to the talent represented by people with disabilities to gain a better understanding of how these workers can help meet workplace needs. The Cerritos College DSPS and its students have participated in this annual event since 2008, and student participation has grown each year..
