- Understanding Decimals
A decimal fraction represents a fraction (rational number) using base 10 notation. Deci is a prefix that means 1/10. Thus, decimal notation is an extension of the whole number place value system to numbers that include fractional parts, parts that have value less than one. The whole number part of the number and the fractional part of the number are separated using a decimal point.
