Cerritos College Board of Trustees Elects New Officers; Welcomes New Member

NORWALK, Calif. – December 21, 2016 – Re-elected members of the Cerritos College Board of Trustees Carmen Avalos (Area #2), Marisa Perez (Area #4) and Dr. Sandra Salazar (Area #6) returned to the Board to serve four-year terms. The Board also welcomed newly elected Trustee Martha Camacho-Rodriguez, representing Area #1.

Martha Camacho-Rodriguez of Downey is a special education teacher at Dominguez High School in the Compton Unified School District.

Carmen Avalos served on the Cerritos College Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2009, and was elected again in 2012. She has served as South Gate's City Clerk since 2001 and teaches biology.

Dr. Sandra Salazar of Norwalk is a family medicine physician in Los Angeles.

Marisa Perez of Lakewood works with South Coast Air Quality Management District since 2010.

The board elected new officers for 2017, electing Zurich Lewis as the new board president, Carmen Avalos as vice president, and Dr. Shin Liu as clerk. The 23-year-old Lewis became the youngest, and the first Cuban-American board president in the College history.

"I am truly honored to have the full faith and confidence of my colleagues to lead this board,” said Lewis. “I pledge to ensure our meetings are laser focused on student success by fostering healthy debate on the issues key to our college. I will work to create unity on our board so our college may best serve the communities we represent."
