WHAT: Hilarious, trenchant, poignant and profound, Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull (1896) is possibly the playwright’s finest work. Set on the summer estate of Russia’s most accomplished actress and her ambitious son, the play portrays a world where egos and aspirations collide and collapse, often to uproarious effect. Chekhov’s insight into the human condition was never sharper, and his observations on the ways we hurt others and ourselves are as timely today as when the play first premiered. Though the clothes may have changed, human nature has not, and in this landmark play Chekhov nails it in all its absurdity with precision, sympathy, and most of all – love.
