Description:

The Success Center will offer Zoom rooms and tutor hosts for scheduled student study groups. The purpose is to provide a space where students can come together based on shared characteristics and discuss their English or math subjects. Hosts, who are English or math tutors and identify with the affinity group, are available to provide a welcoming introduction and answer academic questions if needed. The intent is for the group to be loosely structured so that students have the opportunity to take the lead. The hosts have received appropriate training on the goals and structure for the study groups.

The 15 groups listed in the "targeted groups" section above are a wish list for all of the study groups. As of February 2021, we located tutors to host 7 affinity-based student study groups. These are the groups that we will host in Spring 2021:

  • Black/African American
  • Dreamer/Undocumented
  • English as a Second Language
  • First Generation
  • LatinX
  • LGBTQ+
  • APIDA

Intended Goals/Outcomes:

The goal is to create a sense of belonging and a place where students can find academic support from their peers. The desired outcome is for participating students to complete their college level math or English requirements.

Assessment of the program will be requested at the end of the semester through IERP to determine the success and completion rate of the students who participated in the study groups. In addition, a student satisfaction survey will be sent to students who participated in the groups at the end of the Spring semester.
