Equity in the Classroom

Targeted Group(s):

Instructional and Counseling Faculty

Description:

Equity in the Classroom is a three-week program, in which faculty read Grading for Equity and through large and small group discussions, faculty discuss the important principles of the text and how they can be and why they should be applied to the classroom. The faculty also engage in dialogue that critically examines how structural oppression can create academic barriers to student access, retention, and success.

To do this, each week the faculty complete a module on a different facet of an equitable classroom. The first week will discuss an equity-minded syllabus; the second week, equity-minded assignments, and the third week, equity-minded grading. Each one-week module consists of three tmeeting days, 9-12 MWF, and two reading days, TTH. On the reading days, faculty read from the text and answer questions related to the readings.

Intended Goals/Outcomes:

At the end of this three weeks, the faculty have reflected upon the principles of an equity-minded syllabus, assignments, and grading policy, and produce a set of classroom tools and policies that reflect these principles. Moreover, faculty incorporate one or more of these equity-minded principles into their course and at the end of the semester, reflect on the successes and the challenges that resulted from the changes.
