The Box by Sonja Schenk (2017 Art+Tech Artist-in-Residence: Welding)
The interactive exhibition features “The Box” created by the 2017 Cerritos College ART+TECH
Artist-in-Residence Sonja Schenk in collaboration with faculty and students from the
College’s Film, Printmaking and Welding programs.
The Box, build with the help of Welding Instructor Jason Foral, consists of a complex set of parts, carefully packed in custom paper-pulp molding, along with disposable tools, hardware, and instruction diagrams. When unpacked by visitors, the contents of this box expand to produce an assemblage large enough to fill the exhibition space.
The exhibition also features a video produced with the help of Cerritos College film student Eric Diaz replicates the well-known phenomena of online 'unboxing' videos. The fold-out instruction diagrams were produced in the College’s printmaking facilities, with the help of Instructor Sergio Teran. With these visual assistance, the exhibition visitors are encouraged to attempt to manipulate the box contents and complete the work.
