English 72: Introduction to College Writing and Reasoning (not degree applicable)

Class hours: 5 lecture/1 lab
5 units

As an alternative to the English 20 and English 52 sequence, this accelerated course develops the student’s ability to write essays of varying length and complexity effectively through the writing process. Essay projects integrate critical thinking, analytical reading, multiple modes of college writing, and beginnings of library research in preparation for English 100.

English 100: Freshman Composition

Class hours: 4 lecture
Units: 4

This course guides the student through the writing process to develop expository prose with an emphasis on effective organization and on correctness. It meets transfer requirements at four-year institutions.

English 100S: ENHANCED Freshman Composition

Class hours: 4 lecture/2 lab

This course incorporates and contextualizes reading and writing strategies to develop expository prose with an emphasis on effective organization and correctness. Students will read and comprehend sophisticated texts and respond to diverse ideas and perspectives through writing expository and/or persuasive compositions. Not open to students currently enrolled in or with credit in English 100.

English 102: Introduction to Literature

Class hours: 3 lecture
3 units

Prerequisite: English 100 or equivalent with a grade of Credit or "C" or higher

This course introduces representative works from major genres, develops students’ close reading and analytical writing skills, and promotes appreciation and critical understanding of the cultural, historical, and aesthetic qualities of literature as produced by authors who reflect culturally diverse backgrounds.

English 103: Critical AND Argumentative Writing

Class hours: 3 lecture
3 units

Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of Credit or "C" or higher or a satisfactory completion of the Advanced Placement English Examination of the College Entrance Examination Board

This course develops critical thinking, reading, and writing beyond the level achieved in ENGL 100 (Freshman Composition). The course focuses on the development of logical reasoning, analysis, and argumentative writing skills.

English 110: Critical Thinking through literature

Class hours: 4 lecture
4 units

Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or higher or “Pass”

This course offers instruction in analytical, critical, and argumentative writing, critical thinking, research strategies, information literacy, and proper documentation through the study of literary works from major genres, while developing students’ close reading skills and promoting appreciation for the aesthetic qualities of literature. This course is not open to students who have taken ENGL 101.

English 155: Technical Writing

Class hours: 3 lecture
3 units

Recommendation: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52, or ENGL 72, or ESL 152, or equivalent with a grade of “C”, or higher or "Pass"

This course enhances students’ ability to write clear, effective, and correct technical prose. Students write a series of technical instructions, reports, manuals, and proposals that integrate critical thinking, evaluation, and research. Students will produce a letter of application and resume for technical fields.
