Course Labeling & Transparency

Why Course Labels Matter

Transparency is key when it comes to supporting our students. Course labels for Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) and Low Textbook Cost (LTC) help students make informed decisions at the time of registration.

When students know in advance whether they’ll need to purchase costly textbooks (or if their course uses OER, library resources, or other free/low-cost materials) they can better plan their budgets, stay on track with enrollment, and feel more confident in their academic journey.

What Faculty Need to Do

Faculty play a central role in ensuring this transparency. When building your schedule or submitting textbook information:

  • Indicate if your course uses ZTC or LTC material
  • Confirm your selections early so the labels appear in the online schedule before students register.
  • Update as needed if changes to course materials affect the cost.

How does this benefit students?

  • Financial Relief: Clear labeling highlights affordability and reduces hidden costs.
  • Equity & Access: Students know upfront if free or low-cost options are available, helping remove barriers to enrollment.
  • Trust & Confidence: Students see faculty commitment to transparency, supporting a more positive academic experience.
