English Placement Recommendations

You have a high school Grade Point Average 2.6 or higher 

AND/OR

You feel confident about taking a college-level writing course
You have strategies for reading and comprehending difficult texts
You have practice using a writing process to develop an essay
You feel comfortable working on writing assignments independently
You use campus resources for support when needed

ENGL C1000 (4 units, formerly ENGL 100) - Academic Reading and Writing 

or 

ESL 180 (5 units) - College Composition for Multilingual Students

You have a high school Grade Point Average less than 2.6 or do not know your high school Grade Point Average 

AND/OR

You feel nervous about taking a college-level writing course
You would like to learn more strategies for reading college-level texts
You want help developing your writing skills
You would benefit from more instructor guidance and tutoring during class
You want to learn about campus resources and strategies to succeed

ENGL C1000E (4.5 units; formerly ENGL 100S) - Academic Reading and Writing 

or 

ESL 180 (5 units) - College Composition for Multilingual Students

English as a Second Language Placement Recommendations

… can write short sentences and communicate in simple English about familiar topics, ideas, and activities.

ESL 104 (CSU transferable)- High Beginning ESL Grammar, Reading and Writing
…can read and write in basic English but I’d like to strengthen my vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar for college topics. ESL 105 (CSU transferable) - Intermediate ESL Grammar, Reading and Writing
…can use English in short conversations and long paragraphs. I would like to strengthen my academic writing, reading, critical thinking, and oral presentation skills. ESL 120 (CSU/UC Transferable)- High Intermediate Foundations for College Communication Skills
… can explain and discuss ideas and understand advanced texts or speeches in English. I’d like to work a little more on advanced reading and writing, including research. I would like to review advanced English grammar and vocabulary. ESL 152 (CSU/UC Transferable)- Advanced Academic English Skills for College Success

Math placement recommendations are based on your Learning & Career Pathway and high school grade point average.  Please view this math placement guide beginning Fall 2025 for additional information. 

If you do not have access to your high school transcripts you can still access to first level transfer courses.
