Single-User Restroom Sign Changes and Information on Gender Inclusive Bathroom Forums

Soon, the signs for the campus single-user restroom facilities will be updated to reflect a more inclusive and safe space for all members of our Falcon Family.

To continue fulfilling the College's mission that values itsdiverse student population and is committed to providing these students with high quality, comprehensive instructional programs and support services, Cerritos College will change all single-user restrooms into gender-inclusive restrooms in the beginning of 2017, by changing signage for single-user restrooms.

If you like to learn more about the rights and resources for transgender Falcons and/or contribute input for selecting the new restroom signage, please attend one of the Campus Gender Inclusive Restroom Forums. The forums will take place on the following days in the Student Center:

Wednesday, November 30, 2016 5pm-6pm

Friday, December 2, 2016 6:15 pm-7:45pm (Free Pizza & Child Friendly)

Many institutions have already made this change, including the University of California System which announced this change in 2014. Further, AB 1732 signed into law this past September states that single-user restrooms must be designated as “all gender” by March 1, 2017. More information about AB 1732 is available here and here.

These changes remain consistent with the information previously provided to students and employees regarding guidance issued in July 2016 by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in its Dear Colleague Letter. In summary, this guidance states that a school may provide separate facilities on the basis of sex, but must allow transgender students access to such facilities consistent with their gender identity. Single-user options may be offered for anyone who voluntarily seeks additional privacy.
