College Enhances International Education Through a Virtual English-Language Camp for Taiwanese Children

Zoom session of the camp

Cerritos College recently offered a virtual English-language camp to 300 Taiwanese children. Led by 60 college student volunteers, the three-day camp taught English and the American culture and introduced various areas of study that the U.S. colleges offer to the participants from Taiwan. In addition, community members and high school students shared their experiences working with Taiwanese students. “We enjoyed meeting volunteers from different backgrounds,” said a participant.

In 2017, Cerritos College Board President Dr. Shin Liu, a long-time educator and advocate for student study abroad programs, created the College’s Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP).  Approximately 130 Cerritos College students and alumni have participated in the study abroad and teaching program in Taiwan. When the TEEP program was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Liu launched a virtual English-language camp in 2021. This year marks the third virtual camp.

At Cerritos College, one of our core missions is to prepare students to be productive members of the global community,” said Dr. Shin Liu, board president at Cerritos College. “We are excited to offer these international education opportunities that expose students to rich experiences and allow them to broaden their global and cultural awareness.”
