Hepatitis B

HEPATITIS B  IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS

OSHA considers part-time, temporary, and probationary workers as employees.  Newly hired employees are permitted to participate in patient care during the two to six month period it takes to complete the series of vaccine injections.  While Cerritos College Dental Hygiene students are not considered employees, they are covered under Workman's Compensation while treating dental clinical patients.  Students may be considered volunteers in some clinical facilities.

1.  Cerritos College requires that all Dental Hygiene Students be informed on the recommendation to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination and the risk of occupational exposure.

2.  All dental clinics participating in patient care in contract with the Dental Hygiene Program require all students instructors to have or be in the process of receiving the Hepatitis B vaccination series.

3.  Students may obtain the immunization from their own personal physician or may go to the Cerritos College Student Health and Wellness Center on the Campus of Cerritos College.

4.  All students who are vaccinated at Cerritos College must read and sign the Hepatitis B Vaccine Informed Consent Form provided by the Student Health and Wellness Center at Cerritos College

5.  For individuals who decline the HBV vaccination, a signed waver from a physician claiming contraindicated medical reasons is required.  Counseling will be provided to determine potential health risks and suitability of career choice.

6. The vaccination and follow-up injections must begin by the first week of the first semester.

7.  Proof must be presented to the program director or division clerk who will in turn, file these records in the students personal file.  All information, findings, and diagnoses will remain confidential.
