OUTSIDE IN

By Keenan Derby, Christine Garam Han, Christina Mesiti, and Armando Ramos

In/out, true/false, north/south, light/dark, life/death. The works of Outside In seem to reference both external and internal spaces. But the analogous dichotomies that are conjured blur and haze the spectrum between. Channeled, archetypal memories of the sun, the sea and the sky fleet across the surfaces of Keenan Derby’s work. Canvases become bars, grates and grills in the work of Christine Garam Han, barriers to a space within the paintings that is left only to the imagination. The imprisoned, disembodied faces, hands, feet and breasts of Christina Mesiti’s sculptures writhe and gestate within earthen, geological-looking forms. Sculptures by Armando Ramos strike right at the heart of the dichotomy with evocative imagery reveling in the space between the profane and the sacred.
