2024-25 Convocation urges campus to level up the game for student success
More than 300 faculty and staff members gathered in the Performing Arts Center to
celebrate the 2024-25 academic year during the Convocation on August 29. The event
highlighted the importance of “leveling up” with the Student First Framework to enhance student success in the long term.
Dr. Jose Fierro welcomed the attendees and emphasized the role of education in shaping students’ futures. He highlighted the significant financial benefits of higher education, citing statistics that showed a $500,000 difference in lifetime earnings between a high school diploma and an associate degree, and $1.2 million for a bachelor’s degree.
The event also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Teacher TRAC program, showcasing its success. Guest speaker Jacqueline Cordona, a Teacher TRAC alumna, shared her personal journey and underscored the program’s impact in mentoring and supporting students.
Two student support programs, Puente and Umoja, highlighted their services and the successes of participating students over the years.
The Automotive Technology program shared its achievements, including partnerships with Ford and General Motors, high retention rates, and significant increases in certifications and job placements. The Retail Management Program also reported a 77 percent increase in completions, with students retaining their jobs longer and earning higher salaries.
Throughout the event, attendees participated in a trivia game called “Are You Smarter Than a VP?” to review key concepts of the Student First Framework as well as their knowledge of campus programs, buildings, and achievements.
After the program, employees received a wallet-size card outlining key points for easy reference and enjoyed a BBQ lunch and refreshments.
