Online Teaching Certification (OTC)
Cerritos College Online Teaching Certification
The Cerritos College Online Teaching Certification includes asynchronous modules and three remote book discussion sessions spread out over the semester. OTC is based on the 12-week version from @ONE. Faculty work through asynchronous learning units while participating in a Small Online Teaching Book Seminar. Faculty complete a cumulative project where they build about 25% of their online course in a Canvas sandbox. The Sandbox course is evaluated under current community college mandated requirements for distance education.
Cerritos College Online Certification Covers:
- Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) assess whether instructor creates environments that help students actively connect through meaningful communication, such as thoughtful feedback, clear announcements, and engaging discussions.
- Accessibility to verify instructor adheres to ADA and Section 508 guidelines.
- Assessment to confirm instructor use of formative and summative assessment to track progress, provide ongoing feedback, and assess student- and course-level learning outcomes.
- Course Design & Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to assess instructor's effective use of online-teaching practices and UDL principles to design a course that supports all learners with multiple ways to engage, learn, and demonstrate understanding.

- Complete Asynchronous Online Teaching Certification Units 1-8 which are located in training modules.
- Attend all 3 Small Online Teaching Book Seminars.
- Participate in collaborative activities.
- Read and complete assignments on Small Teaching Online by Flower Darby and James M. Lang.
- Work on and complete your Culminating Project: Canvas Sandbox.
