SUMMER SESSION APPROACHES
Woodworking classes will be held in the second 8-week session of the summer semester—four
weeks later than in previous years. Classes begin June 22 and end August 14. An array
of courses are scheduled, including beginning and advanced classes. View a complete list of course offerings.
Registration opens April 16 for continuing students. Log into MyCerritos to view your scheduled appointment, or if you’re new to the program or returning from a break, learn how to start the registration process.
OUTSTANDING FACULTY AWARD
On April 23, Tony Fortner was honored by his peers with a 2008-2009 Outstanding Faculty
Award at Cerritos College.
Tony, on behalf of the Woodworking Department, congratulations on your achievement! Your dedication to teaching and love for woodworking is stupendous.
CAREER EXPLORATION DAY
On March 6, over eighty students from Bellflower, Lynwood, Mayfair and Somerset High
Schools participated in the Department’s first Career Exploration Day. The event
was intended to bridge career-bound students, with woodworking experience, into the
program. While at the shop, students engaged in three separate demonstrations led
by faculty members Jim Driskell, Brian Koford and Carl Stammerjohn. In addition, Carina
Huynh, manager of the Cerritos CollegeTeacher TRAC program, gave a short seminar on
how to become a woodworking instructor.
Jim impressed students with his turning skills while making various projects from blocks of wood. Using a block of pine he shaped a snowman. Then he made a Christmas tree. For the grand finale, he demonstrated how work can be duplicated when using a measuring gauge. First, he turned a row of oddly shaped beads. Then, took another piece of wood and made one just like it. While demonstrating, Jim spoke about woodturning as a hobby and invited them to take classes at Cerritos College to perfect their turning skills.
Brian shared his expertise of cabinetmaking by building a small cabinet in the CNC laboratory. First, he explained that cabinets were designed on computers using special software programs. Then, he walked over to the beam saw computer and pulled up a file that contained cutting instructions for the cabinet they were going to build. Then, he explained and demonstrated the process of cutting material on the beam saw, banding exposed edges with plastic on the edgebander, and drilling assembly holes using the point-to-point machine. He assembled the cabinet and talked with them about applying the skills to work as a professional cabinetmaker in the industry.
Carl showed students how to make a sunburst pattern using veneer. Using 12 sequential sheets of veneer, he cut them into wedges, trimmed them on a shooting board, and taped them together into two halves. He then trimmed the mating edges straight and taped them together to form the sunburst. He also described how using veneer is a great way to add value to a furniture or cabinet project.
After the rotations were complete, students enjoyed lunch provided by the Teacher TRAC Program and won raffle prizes donated by the Pathways Program and Department Foundation. A special thanks to participating parties of the Los Angeles ROP, Pathway and Teacher TRAC Programs. The event would not have succeeded without them.
WOODWORKING CELEBRATION EVENT
The Woodworking Department is hosting its end-of-year celebration on Saturday, May
23, 2009. We invite you, your family and friends to join us for food, fun and good
company. We will be announcing graduates of the program and “honoring” selected students
with Golden Snowman Awards.
You can get involved with the event by entering your project(s) into the gallery. Cash prizes will be awarded to First Place and People’s Choice winners. Pre-registration is required. See your instructor or download the entry forms for further details.
Also, bring your favorite dessert dish and add it to our potluck dessert menu.

ONTARIO WOODWORKING SHOW
The Department will have a booth at the next Ontario Woodworking Show starting Friday,
May 1 until Sunday, May 3. We are looking for projects to display and docents to work
the booth. We also need volunteers who can help deliver projects to and from the show.

2009 FRESH WOOD STUDENT COMPETITION
Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers (AWFS) is hosting their annual
fair July 15-18, 2009, in Las Vegas. At the fair, students from all over the country
will compete in the 2009 Fresh Wood Student Competition. The competition highlights
outstanding construction and design achievements by students from the best high school
and post-secondary woodworking programs in America. Finalists’ entries will be prominently
displayed at the show and winners will be honored at the AWFS®FAIR Awards Ceremony
on Friday, July 17, 2009.

ORANGE COUNTY FAIR
Now is an excellent time to gear up for the next Fine Art Woodworking competition
hosted by the Orange County Fair. The competition is open to California apprentice
and master level woodworkers ages 19 and older. The entry deadline is May 20. For
more information about the competition and entry forms call Dan Stephens at (714)
