Laura Aguilar

Laura Aguilar was an American photographer of Californian, Mexican, and Irish descent. Aguilar was born in San Gabriel, California and grew up in the San Gabriel valley. After studying photography at East Los Angeles College, her initial photographic production was characterized by self portraits that explored her unique and complex identity. As she progressed through her art career, she began to explore nude self-portraits and nude portraits of other women. These photographs with malleable and fleshy nude bodies placed against harsh nature explore the human connection with nature as well as the relationship that a plus-size woman has with her own body and sexuality. Through her practice, Aguilar wished to bring representation for those historically underrepresented. She quickly gained fame posthumously, and has since been shown in many notable museums like the Getty, Vincent Price, MOCA, and many many more across America.
