European ITS Program: Prometheus

Perhaps the most popular European ITS programs are PROMETHEUS (Program for European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety) and DRIVE (Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe).

PROMETHEUS was launched in 1986 by a dozen European car companies inspired by EUREKA (European Research Coordination Agency), an economic development program designed to increase European industry competitiveness. PROMETHEUS was a 7 year, $700 million program led by Daimler Benz (a German car manufacturing company). It emphasized vehicle-based
ITS R & D activities.
