System Integration Issues
System integration issues involve the following challenges:
- Interfacing old technologies with new technologies
- Aggregating stand-alone technologies into centralized systems that facilitate seamless
information exchange at local and regional levels (on the basis of the premise that
the whole is larger than the sum of its parts...)
- Deployment activities that show consistency with the national ITS architecture, standards, and protocols
Systems integration is largely a software concern. Two problems characterize acquisitions
involving significant software development: products are late and costs overrun the
budget. Software development must be managed differently from traditional department
of transportation approaches that are oriented towards civil engineering projects.
