Black/Africana Studies Associate of Arts DEGREE

The Black/Africana Studies degree program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to critically study the lived experience, life history, and culture of Black people. Undergirded by the three basic areas of focus of the discipline of Africana Studies – which are cultural grounding, academic excellence, and social responsibility – this program is comprised of courses that meet the general education requirements for an associate of arts degree. 

The goals and objectives of this program are to prepare students for transfer to a 4-year institution and a career in the human and social sciences,e.g., education, government and politics, management and industry, communication media, visual/performing arts, non-profit/advocacy, and entrepreneurial studies. Consistent with the institution’s mission of providing all students with access to quality education, this program will also prepare students for work with underrepresented populations and to make important contributions to the multicultural, global society, and world in which we live.

ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Complete a minimum of 60 units, including:

  1. The Black/Africana Studies Core and Department requirements,
  2. A.A. Degree General Education requirements, and
  3. Additional elective courses, as needed
