New CTE Programs

I have an idea for a new CTE program to be offered at Cerritos College! What would be the process to do that?

For new CTE programs, the CTE department chair needs to follow all the steps required by the Cerritos College curriculum committee but also needs to get regional recommendation.

Why would I need regional recommendation?

This is a legal requirement outlined in Title 5 section 55130. Note that programs requiring a vote include new CTE programs, existing low-unit local certificates for state chaptering, and modified programs needing a new control number in COCI. Conversely, modified programs that don’t require a new control number and noncredit programs are not subject to this process and don’t need to be submitted for recommendation. Associate Degrees for Transfer also do not require a regional consortia recommendation.

What do I need to do in a nutshell?

The Los Angeles Regional Consortium recommends credit Career Technical Education (CTE) programs proposed by community colleges in the region. Each of the 19 colleges has a voting member and an alternate, chosen by the college President, who participate in monthly Business Meetings to review, vote, and recommend new CTE programs. For our campus, the voting member is Nick Real, Ed.D. and the alternate is Frank Mixson, Ph.D. Before proposing a new program, colleges must submit a program data request to the region's Center of Excellence (COE), which serves as an initial step in the process. For program recommendations, colleges must complete an online application within one year of receiving the COE Labor Market Information (LMI) report. The application process involves including necessary supporting documents, such as the LMI report, advisory minutes, and documentation of collegial consultation. Voting members at the LA Workforce Council discuss and vote on the recommendations during their monthly meetings, with a quorum required for actions to be taken. Details of the process steps are outlined on the website below.

How exactly would I do that?

You would need to follow the instructions outlined on the LARC website.

Is there any training on how to do that?
