Strong Workforce Projects for 2018-2019

  • Accounting & Finance: The department will obtain a QuickBooks Certification testing site license for Cerritos College students so they have the opportunity to become QuickBooks Certified. The license certification testing is in conjunction with the new QuickBooks Accounting course recently approved by the Chancellor’s Office. (TOP 0502.00)
  • Athletic Trainer Aide & Injury Management: We would like to acquire an Anatomy Dissection Table to be housed in the Kinesiology Teaching Lab. This virtual dissection table will allow for in-depth instruction related to Anatomy, the function of the body, and will replicate the dissection experience students would have in an Anatomy class. The investment in this piece of equipment will provide a long term and sustainable improvement in instruction, student learning, and student skill acquisition. (TOP 1228.00)
  • Automotive Mechanical Repair Technology: This project concentrates on course laboratory support and enhancement through purchasing new tools and tool storage. The tools will be used primarily by students for laboratory instruction. This project will benefit each class that has a laboratory component. Lab instruction can be greatly enhanced with the purchase of complete quality tool sets and storage that will benefit the students in completing lab projects on a timely manner. (TOP 0948.00)
  • Automotive Collision Repair Technology: This project is for new measuring equipment to facilitate and aid in the development of the Honda PACT program and the instruction of proper structural realignment and estimating procedures of not only Honda but all vehicle manufacturers. The training equipment and tools will be used by the faculty for laboratory instruction during structural realignment and assessment. Students will be more prepared for entry into and advancement within the workforce from skills gained in class lab settings as they will be training with current technologies and specialty tools and equipment.   • Business Management: Hosting a pre-conference with WAFC (Western Association of Food Chains) on retail management certificates and pathways, cover Faculty conference travel expenses, hire an Adult Hourly Part-Time #1. Develop regional leadership and partnerships with industry, workforce entities, and other schools to enhance program offerings and student success. Enhance professional development opportunities for CTE faculty to maintain industry and program relevance. Manage pathways to promote career development and the value of career technical education.   • Child Development: Purchase 10 iPad minis for CD students to document children’s learning and complete other CD assignments. IPad mini – to be used by CD students during practicum hours and to complete CD assignments, to gather evidence for assessment purposes and to document children’s learning. Purchase new materials and equipment for updated CDEC 65 Music & Movement for Children course, one of the specialization courses offered in CD Department.   • Cosmetology: Our goals are to Training employees, faculty, and employers on how to post jobs on the Jobspeaker platform. Training students on how to make effective use of the Jobspeaker platform. Providing students the knowledge on how to create a professional portfolio. Providing seminars and guest speakers on creating a business plan, using a 1099, requesting an SBA loan, renting a booth, financial tips, managing a front desk, and booking platforms. We propose to build up the student’s portfolio and knowledge of business to make them more successful in landing a job or creating a job for themselves. (TOP 3007.00)
  • Culinary Arts: The project for Culinary Arts will enhance the learning environment for all students in out lab classes. This will include extending the curriculum content and allow more students the proper equipment to facilitate their learning objectives. The major goal is to provide access to industry professionals and alumni to collaborate in current trends and technics in our industry. (TOP 1306.30)
  • Dental Assisting: Provide the opportunity to have all Dental Assisting faculty (full-time & adjunct) attend a 3-day conference in Anaheim, CA. Purchase new dental equipment and replace outdated and unsafe existing equipment. Hire a recruitment/marketing specialist to market the Dental Assisting Program. The “On Course” conference will provide our faculty with tools to increase student retention and student success. The new equipment will allow our students to learn restorative techniques that are currently used in dental practices. (TOP 1240.10)
  • Dental Hygiene: Provide conference registration fee for all dental hygiene faculty, both part-time and full-time to attend the 2 day “On Course” National Conference, in Anaheim, California. An important outcome for providing all faculty the opportunity to attend the On Course National Conference is to maintain CODA and DHCC compliance. Purchase new equipment and replace outdated and non-functioning equipment. As the profession of dental hygiene evolves, new equipment and replacement of outdated or non-functioning equipment is necessary to keep pace with industry standard. (TOP 1240.20)
  • Educational Technology: The funds received will be used to increase enrollment in the EDT courses through publicity and create new courses that will align with the skills needed for classroom teachers. Conference attendance (including travel)-conferences will help faculty keep abreast of new trends and skills needed in the K-12 setting. Time and or funds to make regular contact with school districts that could feed into program and create student surveys to make the program known and improve offerings.   • (ENGT) Manufacturing Technology: Last year we purchased scanning electron microscope (SEM) to be used as a core tool for PMT, ENGT, NPD and in future WELD inspection classes. Students are using SEM microscope to characterize materials. There is a growing needs for materials inspection at nanoscale in composites, plastics, ceramics, metals and semiconductor industry. Incorporate materials science nanostructure characterization in NPD103, and ENGT131 classes from ENGT. The SEM allowed NPD103 students, as well as students of other ENGT classes to contextualize knowledge of materials microstructures and to relate it to the macro properties Increase percentage of students learning living wages, and create a lot of publicity of the program which will in turn bring higher enrollment.   • Film Production: Purchase of new equipment, students will get high proficiency skills in using current technology and skills to be more competitive in the job market. Purchasing new current technology equipment brings with it the requirement of additional training of new skills for the faculty and adjuncts. Those learned skills and transfer of knowledge by instructors to students will allow them to be viable in the current marketplace in creating media content and having employable skills.   • Fitness Specialist & Fitness Trainer: We would like to acquire an Anatomy Dissection Table to be housed in the Kinesiology Teaching Lab.   • International Business: Be part of 2019 Fall Semester Business Week: One week campus events to promote business learning and student success. The events include a variety of lectures, guest speakers, information sessions, and workshops. Purchase books for faculty library. Books in faculty library help faculty stay update with current business theories and practices. 2-day training events on Everyone Can Code with Apple for up to 20 faculty participants. Enhance student learning by providing technology and accessibility to various campus events. Increase student enrollment and completions, educating students with pathways to AA degrees and 4-year colleges and universities. (TOP 0508.00)
  • Journalism: Merge online-based radio station into existing journalism facility to create MCOM converged media center. Transform an editing lab into a broadcasting center for live and pre-recorded radio and TV streams. Integrate entrepreneurial media skills/theory into curriculum, i.e., web design, app design, podcasting. Establish a Mass Communications Advisory Board comprised of area college representatives, working professionals and alumni. Expand existing multimedia Talon Marks campus newspaper and WPMD radio station entities through professional skill sets in mobile and social media platforms. (TOP 0602.00)
  • Medical Assisting: Develop a Phlebotomy Program for California certification s phlebotomists under the provisions of Chapter 3, Divisional 2 of the California Business and Professions Code. Hire a dedicated recruitment/marketing specialist to market the MA program for future student s and bring enrollment above 60% in MA courses. After successful completion of a state certified Phlebotomy program, students will be able to sit for the state exam to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. (TOP 1208.00)
  • Marketing: Marketing materials to promote the department certificates and pathways. Such as designing and printing posters and handouts for students to learn BA offerings. Purchase 4 laptops for classroom teaching, adding to the current 8 laptops. Purchase 2 MacBook laptop for faculty members teaching the App building classes. Purchase Software, 6 Camtasia licenses for recording lectures online. Purchase 10 flip classroom pads and 1 A-frame. Hire 2 part-time adult hourly.   • Manufacturing & Industrial Technology: We will upgrade the existing optical comparator with new profiling templates, new projecting lights, and screen rotating mechanism. Acquire a vision inspection system and accessories. Acquire a tool pre-setter / measurement system and accessories to provide students with opportunities to learn, to stay on the cutting edge of technologies. We will upgrade and acquire the necessary equipment to provide and to improve student learnings and retention with hands-on practices of tool measuring, tool pre-setting, part inspections, process improvement, and quality assurance as a whole.   • Machine Tool Technology: We will upgrade and acquire necessary equipment such as; Machine Tool Technology instruction with multimedia contents, material testing, and carbide tool grinding instruction. Enhance lab practices with advance tooling and operations instructions. Organize equipment and tooling to meet in industry standard practices. Students will improve learning by having better access the course materials, preview, review and follow proper instruction.   • Commercial Music: The goal is to provide additional certification and training on the latest audio technologies. Purchasing the following; new mixing consoles for the recording studio in order to provide students with access to earn certifications. Purchase new live sound consoles so that more students can engage in live events. Update playback systems in studio to conform to the needs of the new mixing consoles. Purchase dedicated video processing computers so that students can practice synchronizing sound and picture. Purchasing leading-edge audio technology allows students to train on the latest equipment and prepares them for higher paying jobs. (TOP 1005.00)
  • Networking/Cybersecurity: Continual expansion of NetLab infrastructure to support better learning opportunities and experiences. By modernizing classrooms with a technology-assisted student-centered learning environment. Revision and updating of certificate programs (creating stackable certificates) to improve student completion rates and transferability. Supporting students for their IT certifications by providing assisted training and funding for certification exams. Continue development of pathway programs for college students as well as high school students to support college transfer efforts and career development. (TOP 0708.10)
  • Associate Degree Nursing Program: The nursing program is currently revamping the nursing curriculum and moving into a Concept Based Curriculum Model that has been largely researched with positive findings that support that students are better prepared to meet the rigorous demands of patient focus care upon graduation when taught under this approach. The faculty require training and development in how to teach in this model effectively. Looking to further develop the Nurse Skills Lab environment in order to maximize clinical training in a controlled setting. (TOP 1230.10)
  • Paralegal: Increase exposure of our Program to induce high school and college students to major in Paralegal Studies, so there will be sufficient, well-trained employees to meet the paralegal needs of our community. Continue to utilize the services of a part-time Program Facilitator. Our Program has joined and participated in events with the Southeast Bar Association and the Orange County Paralegal Association.   • Pharmacy Technology: Enhancement of equipment, andragogy, professional connections and development. The inclusion of equipment used in both community and acute care pharmacy settings. Obtain a subscription of the Pharmacist/ Technician Letter to improve the Pharmacy Technology references data-base which is essential in the Pharmacy Technology student’s development. Obtain a Omicell medication dispensing cabinet- all student will how to use an automated dispensing cabinet prior to starting their hospital clinical experience. (TOP 1221.00)
  • Physical Therapist Assistant: Host a 2-day Score-builders (Professional Agency) course for PTA graduates to prepare for licensing examination. Send 3 PTA faculty to a 2-day teaching methodology workshop (On-Course, Anaheim, April 12-13, 2019). Hire an adult hourly position to assist with data collection to ensure thorough, timely and consistent Program Assessment. Licensing examination review course will better prepare graduates to pass the exam the first time. Improve Licensure Exam pass rates. Program Faculty current in teaching methodologies.   • Plastics Manufacturing Technology: We have incorporated use of Scanning electron microscope (SEM) in the PMT100 and NPD103 for the imaging of a structures of 3d printed materials and composites and exploring the failure modes of composites. To further expand use of this tool we need to purchase next upgrades to our scanning electron microscope: identification vacuum sputter coater, tomography knife for plastics samples preparation and secondary electron detector (SED) which will allow 3d imaging of materials. Create plastics inspection class from PMT. This will allow further expansion in teaching concepts in inspection, materials sciences, and broaden students career exploration and job opportunity.   • Real Estate: Hiring one hourly staff member for certificate promotions. Enhance professional development opportunities for CTE faculty to maintain industry and program relevance. Marketing Real Estate programs and certificates to students. Participating and presenting program information in Cerritos College Business Week events. Purchase Calculated Industries Qualifier Plus IIIFX calculators for students to use in Real Estate finance and Mortgage Loan brokering and Lending class.   • Speech-Language Pathology Assistant: Develop college-approved curriculum for an adult education course, Pronunciation for Healthcare Professionals. Purchase early intervention therapy materials Lakeshore Learning Company that students can use during their therapy simulations and on their externships. Hire full-time faculty in the SLPA department to create the curriculum for the Pronunciation for Healthcare Professionals course. Students will improve their American English pronunciation in healthcare settings and will increase their preparation for the workplace through exposure and experience with common early intervention therapy materials.   • Technical Theater: Purchasing relevant audio technology allows students to train on the latest equipment and prepares them for working in theater, film, and live concert venues. Working on complex productions allows students to expand their skills and what they offer to employers. Bringing in hourlies who work in the industry allows current students to connect with them and learn what is needed in the industry.   • Welding Department: Purchase and implementation of a CNC Water Jet Cutting System. Purchase and implementation of new Pipe Welding Tools and Equipment. Purchase and implementation of updated American Welding Society Inspection Code Books and Equipment. Certified Welding Inspector Training and Testing for Faculty. The purchase and implementation of a CNC Water Jet Cutting System will provide the welding students with the highest level of cutting capability possible. The objective of these activities is to develop specialized skills needed for the students to be successful in the expanding pipe-line industry. This will directly support the welding blueprint and welding math course curriculums on welds and welding symbols. (TOP 0956.50)
  • Woodworking Manufacturing Technologies: A Job Coordinator (adult hourly) will be hired to identify students looking for employment. Training on the setup and use of our 5-axis router, and the use of CAD/CAM software programs Rhino 3D and Fusion 360. And three faculty members will attend two conferences, the Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers Fair and the Furniture Society Conference. In addition, five Festool ETS random orbital sanders will be purchased; the sanders incorporate efficient dust collection features that virtually eliminate airborne dust and safer lab. (TOP 0952.50)
