Supporting LGBTQ+ Learners in Career Technical Education

Career Technical Education (CTE) policies increasingly aim to support students who identify as LGBTQ+. While Perkins V does not officially recognize LGBTQ+ learners as a special population, this group faces unique challenges such as discrimination, health disparities, and higher rates of poverty and unemployment, necessitating targeted support strategies.

Educators and administrators should attend conferences to receive training to create equitable and supportive learning environments, understanding the diverse identities and needs of LGBTQ+ students. CTE programs should incorporate inclusive practices into their information systems, allowing for preferred names and pronouns to prevent administrative issues.

Creating a welcoming culture in CTE classrooms involves allowing learners to express their preferred names and pronouns and avoiding gendered practices. Faculty can also promote our wraparound supports and thereby contribute to a safer learning environment.
