Participating students must enroll in only 1 of the 2 HyFlex classes offered during summer 2025 Mid-session (06/16 - 07/25/2025).

  • Classes begin June 16, 2025 in the U.S. - ONLINE
  • Students will travel to Japan from July 14 - 25, 2025 for the final 2 weeks of the session.

ENGL 110: Critical Thinking Through Literature (4 units)

Transfer Credit: CSU; UC
Fulfills Plan B (CSU) -- A.3. Critical Thinking requirement
Fulfills Plan C (IGETC) – Area 1.B. Critical Thinking—English Composition requirement
Prerequisite: Completion of English 100 with a grade of “C” or higher, or “pass,” or the equivalent.

Course Description: In this course, students apply critical thinking skills, close textual analysis, and research practices in writing analytic, argumentative essays about literary fiction, poetry, and drama. On this program, the course will have an emphasis in Japanese literature including the mysterious world of the Geisha, Japanese ghost stories, Japanese Tanka poetry, and anime/manga. 

JAMS 100: Mass Communications & Society

Course Description: This course examines the impact of mass media in national and international political, economic, cultural and behavioral contexts. It assesses contemporary trends in media-society relations; historical facts that have shaped the structures, practices and products of the mass media industries and trends in media-society relations. The course content will include discussion of J-pop, anime, comic books, video games, film – and excursions to Ghibli Animation Studios, NHK Studios, Associated Press Japan, Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Sony Music Entertainment Japan. 

Any Cerritos College student that meets the requirements below can apply to participate in the Japan Study Abroad program:

  • provides unofficial copies of transcripts, showing minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • completion of English 100 with a "C" or better, or "Pass"
  • 18 years of age or older
  • must enroll in one of the program offered courses

Student who are currently attending other colleges or universities may also participate in the Cerritos College study abroad program. They must apply to Cerritos College and enroll in summer courses, including one of the program offered courses (e.g. ENGL 110 or JAMS 100).

The cost of the summer 2025 study abroad program in Japan will be based on the number of students who enroll*

  • 15 to 19 students: $4,100**
  • 20+ students: $3,800 

*$4,100 will be collected and if 20+ students enroll, students will be reimbursed the difference.

Paying fees:

  • Study abroad program fees:  paid to Cerritos College, instructions will be sent to program participants only.
  • Fees for enrollment in Cerritos College classes: students pay directly to Cerritos College via MyCerritos.
  • Passport and other fees for travel: students pay to source provider

**A minimum of 15 students must apply and pay fees in full for this program to be able to run.

  • Accommodation: shared double-occupancy hotel room with en-suite bathrooms (2 students per room)
  • Daily breakfast and Wi-Fi included at hotel
  • Pre-departure and In-Country Orientation
  • CET staff support, including 24/7 emergency contact
  • Transportation: One-time transportation to and from arrival/departure airports,
  • timed to meet the group flight on the scheduled arrival date
  • Public transportation pass in Kansai and Tokyo
  • Cultural Activities including walking tours and museums
  • Full-day excursion to Nara with paid entrance and guided tour of Todai-ji
  • Student medical insurance in the host country
  • Round-trip airfare
  • Passport or visa fees, if applicable
  • Food or meals other than the planned program meals
  • Personal expenses
  • Fees for enrolling in Cerritos College classes (CCPG/BOG waivers apply)
  • Textbooks or other class supplies
  • World Trip Protector Insurance - to protect program fees in case of program cancellation or interruption.
  • Tuesday, February 3, 2025: non-refundable enrollment deposit due ($450 of the total program fee)
  • Monday, March 10, 2025: $2,000 payment due
  • Tuesday, April 15, 2025: $1,650 final payment due
  • Wednesday, May 27, 2025: Payment to Cerritos College for enrollment in class(es) in the study abroad program

Student withdraws on or before March 10, 2025:

All fees paid, less the  $450 non-refundable deposit

After March 11, 2025, but before May 15, 2025:

Up to 50% of fees paid, less the $450 non-refundable deposit

May 15, 2025 or after: 

No refund, and the total program fee is due.

Once the program has begun:

No refund. Should Cerritos College or CET Academic Programs cancel the program prior to departure for reasons within its control, students will receive a full refund, less the $450 non-refundable deposit. Should CET cancel a program after May 15, 2025 (including once the program has started) for reasons beyond its control including but not limited to Acts of God, government actions (including those restricting travel), pandemics, fire, flood, explosion, earthquake, or other natural forces, war, civil unrest, accident, any strike or labor disturbance, or any other event similar to those enumerated above (a “Force Majeure Event”) students will receive no refund except for recoverable costs.**

Additional Worldwide Trip Protector Insurance: 

Participants are encouraged to purchase the Additional Worldwide Trip Protector insurance to cover Program Fees in case of interruption or cancellation due to medical reasons.
