Retiree Mark Hugen Recognized

Mark Hugen with his wifeMark Hugen began teaching mathematics at Cerritos College in August 1998. Prior to that he taught at Valley Christian High School. He received a master’s degree from California State University, Fullerton. Mark spent the last 24 years teaching mathematics, and has touched the lives and ensured the success of thousands of students at Cerritos College—from helping students build basic math skills and confidence that they could do math to teaching complex calculus concepts to become the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.

Mark has not only served as a model for his students, but also has served as a leader in the Mathematics Department. Mark recently completed a sabbatical project of developing over 100 animations using free graphing software to illustrate complex mathematical concepts in calculus courses. In addition to presenting these new teaching tools to his colleagues as well as math students in the Cerritos College Math Club, Mark has presented at multiple conferences, allowing him to share his innovative animations with the mathematics teaching community throughout California.

In addition to his teaching, Mark has been involved in a plethora of projects and initiatives at the College during his tenure, including:

• Serving as a mathematics faculty advisor for multiple grants;
• Researching how students process word problems to promote student success in developmental math courses;
• Serving as a Success Center and EOPS Tutor;
• Participating in numerous Faculty Inquiry Groups;
• Serving as Math Field Day Director;
• Coordinating Part-Time Mathematics Faculty evaluations;
• Serving twice as a Faculty Senator in addition to various committees and workgroups; and
• Representing the College by presenting at local, state, and national conferences.

Thank you, Mark, for your service at Cerritos College! Upon your retirement, we wish you good health, success, and fulfillment in the many years ahead.
