Supporting Military-Connected Learners in Career Technical Education
Career Technical Education (CTE) programs are increasingly addressing the needs of military-connected learners, who are students with a parent or guardian on active military duty. Although not formally categorized as a special population under Perkins V, these learners face unique challenges due to frequent relocations and transitions, necessitating targeted support strategies.
Standardizing course sequences across districts allows military-connected learners to continue their education without losing progress when moving. Support structures, including access to community resources and financial assistance, can further aid these students. Career exploration and counseling should be emphasized to connect learners with relevant opportunities and scholarships.
Creating a welcoming environment through affinity groups and outreach initiatives can help military-connected learners feel supported. Additionally, training faculty by attending conferences to understand the unique needs of these students ensures they receive appropriate support. These efforts collectively contribute to a more inclusive and supportive CTE experience for military-connected learners.
