Facilitation Strategies for Meaningful Learning
Designing Workshops that Make a Difference
The goal of every CTX workshop is to move beyond inspiration and ideas—and into action that changes teaching and improves student success. Effective professional development should help faculty understand how to apply new strategies in the classroom and lead to tangible outcomes for all learners.
Before Your Workshop:
- Build your session with implementation in mind—what should faculty be able to do differently after attending?
- Identify your campus allies: CTX, the Library, Academic Affairs, Faculty Senate and fellow faculty are here to support you.
- Investigate innovative ways to engage participants in the learning process.
- Prepare thoroughly: know your agenda, refine your content, and bring ready-to-use materials or examples.
- Arrive early to check the room setup, test technology, and ensure everything is ready to go.
During Your Workshop:
- Share clear learning outcomes for the session and keep the agenda focused on practical takeaways.
- Model engaging instructional strategies that faculty can replicate in their own classrooms.
- Prioritize interaction and active participation; use tools like think-pair-share, case studies, or live demos.
- Keep the conversation relevant and moving forward; encourage questions and real-time problem-solving.
- Stay flexible—be ready to adapt, adjust, and clarify as needed.
- Follow the timeline, wrap up on time and offer follow-up support or materials.
the learning environment:
- Create a welcoming, conversational tone that encourages open exchange.
- Acknowledge and incorporate participants’ expertise—ask about their teaching contexts and build on what they know.
- Avoid long lectures; instead, foster dialogue, demonstration and examples.
- Be energetic and use real-world examples to ground your points.
- Consider varied learning styles: include visuals, movement, discussion, and hands-on tasks.
