Regular & Substantive Interaction (RSI)

In online learning environments, meaningful engagement between instructors and students is essential for fostering a high-quality educational experience. Regular and substantive interaction (RSI) ensures that students receive the academic support, feedback, and engagement necessary to enhance their learning and success. RSI goes beyond passive content delivery, requiring faculty to actively participate in discussions, provide timely feedback, and initiate meaningful communication. By incorporating intentional and structured interactions, instructors create a more engaging, inclusive, and supportive online learning environment that mirrors the benefits of face-to-face instruction.
To promote meaningful engagement and compliance with RSI requirements, consider the following strategies:
- Use Frequent and Personalized Instructor-Initiated Communication: Regularly reach out to students through announcements, emails, discussion boards, and video messages to maintain engagement and provide guidance.
- Incorporate Interactive Discussions: Require participation in structured discussions where instructors actively engage, pose questions, and provide meaningful responses to encourage critical thinking.
- Provide Timely and Substantive Feedback: Offer detailed feedback on assignments, assessments, and participation to support student learning and progress.
- Host Live Sessions or Office Hours: Schedule synchronous opportunities, such as virtual office hours or live Q&A sessions, to foster direct engagement between students and the instructor.
- Use Multimedia for Instructional Presence: Integrate instructor-created videos, audio recordings, and interactive elements to enhance course material and maintain a visible teaching presence.
- Design Collaborative Activities: Encourage peer interaction through group projects, peer reviews, and interactive activities that require instructor oversight and engagement.
- Monitor and Respond to Student Progress: Actively track student participation and performance, proactively reaching out to support those struggling or disengaged, including sharing and/or introducing them to key resources/personnel.
- Clarify Expectations for Instructor-Student Interaction: Create a Communication Plan that you post in your syllabus and orientation module, which clearly outlines the frequency and modes of instructor communication, feedback, and availability to ensure transparency in engagement expectations.
- Conduct a Self-Assessment for RSI Compliance: Periodically assess your course to ensure it meets RSI standards by using an RSI checklist or peer review process to identify areas for improvement.
- Create an RSI Module in Canvas: In an unpublished Canvas module, outline your Regular (weekly) and Substantive Interaction habits, including a Communication Plan for documentation and future reference. Here is an RSI module example.
Implementing the above strategies regularly fosters a high-quality online learning experience while meeting regular and substantive interaction standards.
