ASTR 105L

Student Learning Outcome: A student successfully completing Astronomy 105L will be able to demonstrate

  1. The scientific method,
  2. The celestial sphere,
  3. Optics,
  4. Telescopes and telescopic viewing,
  5. Spectroscopy and its uses, and
  6. Other topics as defined by the current lab manual.

Prerequisites or co-requisites: A student must have completed ASTR 102, ASTR 103, ASTR 104, or ASTR 106 with a grade of "C" or better, or be currently enrolled in one of these classes to take ASTR 105L.

Textbook: There is no required text for this class. All materials can be downloaded from this webpage or Canvas.

Sky Journal: As a part of this lab, you will need to keep a record of observations of the sky. Any sketches made at the telescope need to include:

  • The date and time of the observation
  • The location (city and state, or longitude and latitude) from which the observation was made
  • The details of the telescope used, including the aperture
  • The focal length of the eyepiece
  • The magnification at which the sketch was made

Laboratory materials:

During the Summer 2013 session, we practiced some image processing techniques on regions of the Moon. The resulting images are available for your viewing.

Here is an image of Jupiter that was produced from data taken during lab on 2015-02-05:
