Learning to think and create like an engineer! This was the motto of our students in the Skills USA Robotic Competition! Students created and built robots using machine tools and engineering design in 2012 and 2013. The Robotics competition preparation was also available to middle school students.

How did this happen? Pathway Programs was awarded an Edison Grant in the Fall of 2012, which sponsored the Pathway Programs Robotics Club. The Robotics Club began in October with local middle school students. The program was so popular that we had a waiting list of 30 students wanting to participate and had to increase the number of participants from 24 to 30. The Robotics Club was taught by Julio Guzman, an instructor at Bellflower High School. Our club had students representing all our local K12 school districts.

Mr. Guzman taught students to create and build LEGO robots utilizing machine tools and engineering design software. Students used the software to program their robots to do autonomous movements, and also learned to navigate the robots via the use of controls. Students worked in teams of 2-3 and learned team work, and practical skills in manufacturing technology, mathematics, and engineering technology. Students were able put their skills to the test at the Skills USA competition.

23 students participated in the Skills USA competition held on February 2, 2013 at Los Angeles Trade Tech. Originally we were told they would compete against high school students, however, because we had so many students participating they created a middle school category. The following students placed in the competition:

1st Place:
Mohammed Siddiqui
Aadil Kher

2nd Place:
Jalen Nicolas
John Nicolas

3rd Place:
Xavier Valencia
Jason Gonzalez

The top two teams advanced to the State Skills USA Competition in San Diego. Our middle school students competed in the high school category. The students worked really hard in a few months to prepare for the competition. We were extremely proud of them!

Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) fields Conference

March 22, 2013 - Conference

Thanks to a grant received by Southern California Edison Company the Pathway Programs Department at Cerritos College held a STEM Conference for 5th and 6th grade students on March 22, 2013. Students came from different school districts around the local community such as ABC Unified, Downey Unified, Paramount Unified, Norwalk-La Mirada Unified, and Valley Christian Elementary.

The theme of the conference was "It's not too soon to think about your future in STEM!" The purpose of the conference was to introduce students to the various career pathways available in STEM, as well as to motivate them to pursue STEM courses in middle school and high school, ultimately leading to more STEM college students.

STEM Conference Agenda

Career Days - Pathway Programs offers high schools and middle schools the opportunity to participate in career days at Cerritos College. As part of Career Day students attend 3-4 faculty run workshops to learn about the various programs and departments on campus. Students have an opportunity to watch a live demonstration of concepts learned in class and ask the faculty members questions. In addition, students receive information on Cerritos College.

If your school or organization is interested in attending a career day, please contact Carla Yorke at (562) 860-2451 Ext. 2484.

Career Speaker Series - The Pathway Programs Department sponsors a Career Speakers Series that focuses on the 15 career pathways (www.whodouwant2b.com). Composed of a panel of various industry professionals, the speakers share their work experience, years of education, their career pathway, and answer questions from the audience. The Career Speakers Series is targeted for middle school and high school students, and their parents. However, the event is open to the general public. Not only do the career speaker series help students and their parents find out more information about various career fields, but it also gives students the opportunity to network with working professionals.

If your organization is interested in hosting a Career Speakers Series event and/or to find out the dates, times and locations, please contact Carla Yorke at (562) 860-2451 Ext. 2484.

Road Trip Nation - is a public television series, grassroots movement, an a virtual online curriculum that encourages Middle School and High School students to explore their interests, different careers, and pathways. The students embark on twelve guided lessons that help them define their own path in life. The lesson plans are broken up into three parts: Exposure, Self-Construction, and a Road trip Project. In the first part, Exposure, students are introduced to new places, people, and ideas. The second section, Self-Construction, takes students on a path to self-discover by having them identify who they are, what they love doing, and aligning their interests and values with the kind of work they would find meaningful and fulfilling. These first two parts culminate in a local Road trip Project, where they will connect with community leaders to find out about the unique paths these individuals took to get to where they are now. Throughout this workshop, students will keep a journal to reflect on the journey they undertake. Road Trip Nation and Cerritos College Pathways are inspiring young students to purse their dreams.
