Electrician Trainee 

The Electrician Trainee Program with the Continuing Education Division at Cerritos College offers both “Whole Residential Electrician” and “Non Residential Lighting Technician” Programs that are approved by the California Department of Industrial Relations. Students interested in either program must complete a Cerritos College Continuing Education Electrical Trainee Application, Math Comprehension Assessment, Oral Interview, and Orientation. Candidates who successfully complete the oral interview will then move on to the admissions selection process. Students accepted into the program, will receive an admissions letter from the electrical liaisons as well as steps on how to apply for their Electrician Trainee Card with the State of California. Students accepted into the program are responsible for obtaining a sponsor (employer) who is a licensed C-10 Electrical contractor with the State of California before the start of the first class. 

Students interested in applying for the Spring 2025 Cohort, will need to complete the Electrician Trainee Program Application.  Applicants are admitted into the program once a year, with student capacity into the program being limited to 30 students. The next application cycle for the Spring 2025 Cohort will open May 2024 and close at the end of August 2024.

Residential Electrician

A Residential Electrician is one who performs work for an electrical contractor installing, constructing, or maintaining any electrical system that is covered by the National Electrical Code in single family homes and multi family units, including hotels and motels, where the primary occupancy of the building is considered residential and the maximum voltage received from a utility company is phase 3, 4 wire, 120/208 OR 120/240 volts. The Residential Electrician also performs work installing the required panel boards and feeders for commercial tenant space in a multi family/ multi-use occupancies, where less than 50 percent of the first floor level is used for commercial tenant space, but not performing any tenant improvement for these spaces. In order to apply for the California State Residential Electrician exam, electrician trainees must complete 4,800 hours of training under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor (C-10) and complete a state approved curriculum. Students who are accepted into the Residential Electrician Program with the Continuing Education Division will apply for their Electrician Trainee cards as well as enroll in our State approved curriculum that consists of a total of 18 classes. 

Certificates of Completion students in the Whole Residential Electrician Trainee Program will complete include:

    • Energy Corps, Certificate of Completion
    • Renewable Energy, Certificate of Completion
    • Non-Residential Lighting Technician, Certificate of Completion
    • Whole Residential Electrician, Certificate of Completion

 

Non Residential Lighting Technician 

A Non-Residential Lighting Technician is one who performs work for an electrical contractor repairing, servicing, and maintaining existing Non Residential Lighting fixtures and installing retrofit upgrade fixtures. To apply to the California State Non Residential Lighting Technician exam students must complete 2,000 hours of training under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor (C-10) and complete a state approved curriculum. Students who are accepted into the Non Residential Lighting Technician Program with the Continuing Education Division will apply for their Electrician Trainee cards as well as enroll in our State approved curriculum that consists of a total of 8 classes. 

Certificates of Completion students in the Non-Residential Lighting Technician Electrician Trainee Program will complete include:

    • Energy Corps, Certificate of Completion
    • Renewable Energy, Certificate of Completion
    • Non-Residential Lighting Technician, Certificate of Completion

 

Program Costs

  • Courses are completely free and at no cost to students accepted
  • Textbooks and tools  will be provided for in class use only
  • Out of pocket fees that students will be responsible for are the
    • Electrician Trainee Card Application ($25.00)
    • State Exam Application ($75.00 plus $100 per exam)
    • Student Activities ($19.00) and Student Health Fees ($19.00)
    • CPR and First Aid Card Fees ($35.00)
