Critical Thinking Workshops

Critical Thinking Workshop 1: Claims, Reasons, & Evidence:Almost all college classes will encourage you to think critically about authors' arguments - with the topics ranging from the best interpretations of the meanings of works of ancient art or classical literature to the best solutions to contemporary problems. The first step in analyzing authors' arguments is identifying three essential elements: their claims, their reasons, and their evidence.

  • Wednesday, September 30 (12:00 - 1:00 pm)
  • Thursday, October 1 (4:00 - 5:00 pm)

Critical Thinking Workshop 2: Types of Evidence: Once you've developed an ability to identify the essential elements of claims, reasons, and evidence in authors' arguments, the second step in thinking critically about their claims is to differentiate between the different types of evidence used to support their reasoning. In this workshop, you will learn about the most common forms of evidence, including anecdotes, examples, authorities, and statistics.
