All workshops are scheduled in LC173, located on the lower level of the LRC in the Math Success Center

NOTE: The workshops in this series are designed to be taken in sequence.

All workshops begin on the hour. No late entry is permitted.

1. Reading Your Instructor's Prompt: In this workshop devoted to the essential first step in the process of writing a research paper, you will learn howto analyze your instructor's prompt to identify the tasks you are expected to perform and the topics you are expected to cover. 2. Managing Time Throughout Your Research Process: After analyzing your instructor's prompt in the first activity in this series, you will learn aboutsome of the most common steps in the process of writing a research paper and create a realistic schedule for completing them before the due date for yourassignment.

3. Articulating Your Research Question: In this activity, you will learn how to first narrow your topic and then articulate a research question. Finally,you will form a hypothesis and identify specific claims to support through your research.

Library Research: Getting Started: In this activity, you will learn how to access and use library resources such as research guides, the library catalog, and the library databases to find authoritative sources for your paper. You will learn how to login to your library account, how to find books and articles, and how to access the databases from off-campus.

Library Databases: Finding Articles: In this activity, you will learn about the scholarly databases available through the Cerritos College Library. You will learn how to select a database, select your search terms, and narrow and refine your search results to locate magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for your research paper. You will also learn how to save your searches, get citations, and create search alerts and RSS feeds.

4. Evaluating Your Sources: In this activity, you will learn how to first differentiate between popular and scholarly articles. After identify appropriatesources for your research paper, you will evaluate their respective authors' credibility and bias -- if any.

5. Summarizing Your Sources: In this activity, you will work to develop the critical reading, thinking, and writing techniques needed to effectively andefficiently summarize scholarly sources. (See also Documentation Dos and Don'ts 1: Using Sources I -- Summarizing under Writing Workshops)

6. Paraphrasing and Quoting Your Sources: In addition to learning how to paraphrase and quote the words of others, you will plan how to use thesetwo techniques to support important points in your research paper. Citing Your Sources -- and Formatting Your Paper -- According to APA Style: You will learn the basics of American Psychological Association(APA) Style. (See also Documentation Do's and Don'ts 3: Using APA Documentation and Formatting)

10c. Creating Citations and Works Cited with EasyBib: In this activity, you will learn how to make effective use of the EasyBib citation tool to generate in-text citations and a list of works cited for your essays and papers.
