  • Analyze contributions of a range of authors, including those from historically underrepresented groups, from the beginnings to the second half of the 19th century of American literature
  • Examine the distinct characteristics of the literary periods that emerge from the beginnings to the second half of the 19th century of American literature
  • Evaluate the literary, cultural, historical, philosophical, and aesthetic influences on specific texts
  • Analyze and synthesize the contributions of key American authors to the development of American literature
  • Demonstrate understanding of the approaches to evaluating literary works for their literary, cultural, historical and political features 
  • Demonstrate comprehension of the above through class discussion, written exams, multimodal projects, and/or essays using MLA formatting and documentation
