- Analyze contributions of a range of authors, including those from historically underrepresented groups, from the second half of the19th century of American literature to the present
- Examine the distinct characteristics of the literary periods that emerge from the second half of the 19th century of American literature to the present
- Evaluate the literary, cultural, historical, philosophical, and aesthetic influences on specific texts
- Analyze and synthesize the contributions of key American authors to the development of American literature
- Demonstrate understanding of the approaches to evaluating literary works for their literary, cultural, historical and political features
- Demonstrate comprehension of the above through class discussion, written exams, multimodal projects, and/or essays using MLA formatting and documentation
